Snapshoot on mobilecrossmedia and 2DCode readers
par Eric JENOUVRIER, dimanche 20 juillet 2008 à 23:04 | Mobilecrossmedia | #14 | rss
Hi all,
I try to make a synthesis/snapshoot of main readers available on the market and able to read QRCode and Datamatrix code (main open standard). The spreadsheet may have some missing information, so please feel free to make a comment, I will update news accordingly :

Google Trends
On the same time, I took a look 2dcode popularity/audience by taking a look on average search traffic information (source google trends).
As we can see, QRCode and Datamatrix have the higher popularity. I can notice the Ez code start a green graph early 2008, we should check what will happen in next month (GS1 already choose some standard and Ez code seem not to be included).

Datamatrix
A Data Matrix code is a two-dimensional matrix barcode consisting of black and white square modules arranged in either a square or rectangular pattern. The information to be encoded can be text or raw data. Usual data size is from a few bytes up to 2 kilobytes. The length of the encoded data depends on the symbol dimension used. Error correction codes are added to increase symbol strength: even if they are partially damaged, they can still be read. A Data Matrix symbol can store up to 2,335 alphanumeric characters.... (source wikipedia)
QR Code
A QR Code is a matrix code (or two-dimensional bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. The "QR" is derived from "Quick Response", as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. QR Codes are common in Japan where they are currently the most popular type of two dimensional code (source wikipedia).
EZcode
A EZcode is a matrix code (or two-dimensional bar code) created by ETH Zurich and licensed by Scanbuy (www.scanbuy.com). Scanner software for the EZcode is available from ScanLife (www.scanlife.com) for many phones across operating systems including BREW, Java, RIM, Symbian, Windows, and Palm. The software works by uploading a picture taken with the phones camera to a web server that in turn decodes the EZcode and sends the content back to the phone in seconds. The reader can be downloaded from a mobile browser at www.getscanlife.com. (source wikipedia)
